like to acknowledge Rose Center, which is the historic building that
inspired this story. As a kid, I took dance lessons there. Walking
down the hallways, it had an air about it that made me want to
hold my mom’s hand until we got outside. Even now, that same,
somewhat eerie, feeling always comes over me when I step inside. It’s
like you can feel the energy of years past floating all around you.
At one point in time, from 1892 to 1975, it was actually a school.
It’s now a museum and cultural center and, for several years, has
been the location for our local Mountain Makins Festival, which
features local crafters, artists, musicians, and food. Several years
ago, I was invited to be one of just a handful of authors who would
be participating in the Authors’ Corner at the festival. I still
remember how honored and excited I was, especially when I found out
I’d be there with fellow author, Bill Landry, who is an actor,
director, and producer of The Heartland Series, which is something I
had watched on TV since I was a young kid. I’ll never forget
getting to meet him and the fact that I sat right across from him in
a very popular area of Rose Center called… Prater Hall.

We did let our kids live life, but we also had rules that we expected to be followed. Even so, I'd be questioned as to why they weren't allowed to do something or get the occasional, "But so-and-so's mom lets them." My favorite comeback for this was, "Maybe so-and-so's mom doesn't love them as much as I love you." That one usually shut them up. How could they argue with love?

As a mom, I've been hated. Neither of my kids ever said it to me, but I'm sure they thought it. And when that happened, especially as they got older, it hurt. The way I see it, though, if you're not hated (or at least strongly disliked) at some point, you're not doing it right. If we try to make our kids happy 100% of the time, we're failing them and ourselves.

As a mom, we learn as we go. Yes, there are numerous books telling you how someone thinks you should parent, but let's get real, here. Every child, family, and environment is different and there's no one right way to do it, only your way. If you truly love your kids and only want the best for them, you're doing it right. Even when it may not feel like it, if it's from a place of love, it is. Will your choices and decisions always turn out the way you expected? No. Even so, if no one was hurt in the process, then high-fives to you! And if someone was, learn from it. The only true mistakes we make are the ones we make twice. The rest are simply mess-ups that we make sure not to repeat.

As a mom, you will mess up. You will. But ya know what? That's okay! Your kids don't want or need perfect, they need you. They need you and all of your imperfections. How else would they be able to learn how to handle life and all the things it throws at them? Not only do we learn from our mess-ups, but so do they. Looking back, my many imperfections taught my children patience, love, understanding, forgiveness, tenacity, strength, and empathy. I was the best mom I knew how to be and, surprisingly, that was enough.

And finally, some things I wish I had done more often...

As a mom, love yourself so it overflows into them. Rest so you have the energy to give them your all because that's what you're going to do, anyway, so you might as well have some saved up. Destress and detox your mind every single day so it doesn't accidentally explode out of you in a negative way. And reassure yourself that you're an amazing mom, especially on the days when you feel anything but.

❤

Share this with another imperfect mom who's doing an amazing job.
Janaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10445538320161177834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6889765750073435888.post-15243081098829096182023-04-10T10:49:00.005-04:002023-05-13T09:40:11.679-04:00Celiac Disease is No Joke!

In March of last year, my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. On one hand, we're thankful that's all it is and that as long as she doesn't eat gluten at all for the rest of her entire life, she'll be okay. On the other hand, Celiac Disease is no joke! It's not a simple food allergy. It's an autoimmune disease that can affect her entire system, not just her stomach, and it has. Looking back at the problems she started having in middle school, a lot of things make sense, now. Is it all connected to Celiac? We'll never know. However, after doing a lot of research, I'd say it played a role in a lot of it. That's why I wanted to share our experience because, from what I've learned so far, this disease affects everyone differently.

Joint Pain

Around sixth grade, my daughter started complaining that her knees hurt when she bent down and that her ankles sometimes caused her pain when she walked. After talking to her pediatrician about her discomfort, she said to keep an eye on it. If it worsened or continued, she said she'd run some tests to detect inflammation issues, but it would always come and go and never kept her from doing anything, so no testing was done. An underlying symptom of Celiac is inflammation.

Spondylolysis

Since seventh grade, she played both school and club volleyball. She was a hitter and also loved to dive when necessary to save the ball. During her sophomore year, she suffered from stress fractures through the pars interarticularis of the lumbar vertebrae, which is a mouthful to say. The simple term she was diagnosed with is spondylolysis. Whatever you want to call it, she hurt. At night, especially after practice or games, she'd cry because the pain was so bad. Even though she's not played in a year, she still has back pain.

After doing research, I realized that a complication with untreated celiac disease is the inability of children to develop optimal bone mass, which puts them at risk of having low bone mineral density (BMD), osteopenia, and osteoporosis-related fractures.

Anxiety

During her junior year, anxiety hit. My daughter, who'd always been happy and outgoing, started having anxiety attacks and had to take anxiety medicine just so she could walk into school. We assumed the change was because everyone had been forced to stay home so long due to Covid and that returning to normal life had triggered something in her. I talked to her guidance counselor, so she'd know what was going on, and we all did our best to help her manage it. Having social anxiety, myself, I completely understood what she was going through. I'd had it since I could remember, though, so it was odd that hers showed up so suddenly. It embarrassed her because she had no idea when it would hit or when she'd start crying, which would also randomly happen, and she couldn't control it. Sadly, that still happens. It's also something that, along with other psychological and neurological issues, can be associated with celiac.

Nausea, Vomiting, Pain, Diarrhea, & Weight Loss

The beginning of last year is when the bottom fell out. January, right when the second semester of her senior year was starting, my daughter started waking up every single morning at around 4:00 a.m. nauseous, sweating, and in the bathroom throwing up. She was incapacitated all morning and wasn't able to function until about lunchtime when the pain and nausea would ease up. This continued for almost three long and agonizing months. It got to the point she dreaded going to sleep at night because she knew what would happen as soon as she woke up. At one point, she even puked a little blood, which the E.R. doctor said was just irritation from her esophagus where she'd thrown up so much. Regardless of the cause, it was all very scary.

It was also relentless. Every. Single. Day. She cried. I cried. It sucked and my heart broke for her because I couldn't make it stop or make her feel better. Neither could her doctor. She gave her acid reflux and nausea medications, which didn't work, and referred us to a gastroenterologist, who increased her acid reflux medicine. When that, too, didn't work, she was scheduled for an endoscopy... on the same day as her eighteenth birthday.

After being sick for months, losing thirty pounds (when she was already thin), and having depression on top of her anxiety, the testing showed she had Celiac Disease.

We were thankful and relieved to know what was wrong, but also sad to realize she had a disease that would alter her life forever. Even so, it's manageable. No gluten. We could handle that. Not comfortably or with ease, but together. It was going to be okay.

No gluten means NO gluten!

People with Celiac Disease can't eat gluten or use products (lotions, toothpaste, etc.) that contain gluten at all. None. Not a bite, drop, or even a crumb. If they do, it can set off their immune system and cause damage to the small intestine, whether or not they experience symptoms. Over time, this can cause anemia, a higher risk for infertility and certain types of cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, heart disease, liver failure, and many neurological symptoms. Sadly, she's learning this the hard way.

Most fries are naturally gluten-free, however, some fast-food restaurants cook theirs in oil that is cross-contaminated with foods that contain gluten, meaning theirs cannot be considered gluten-free. Simply eating three fries from a restaurant caused her to have an attack that sent her to the E.R. in extreme pain, vomiting, and with brain fog, which scared her. After being put on fluids for a few hours and given pain meds, she felt better, but it was very eye-opening. She can never assume something is gluten-free or that it's not exposed to it if she's unsure. Just because most fries are okay to eat doesn't mean they all are. And if pizza is supposed to be gluten-free, yet it's made on the same line as regular pizza, guess what? It's not 100% gluten-free.

Where we are now...

It's been a year since she was diagnosed and we're still learning. She's not gained much weight back and is self-conscious about it, especially because most of her clothes don't fit, and a lot of people who haven't seen her in a while comment on how small she is, now. People who don't even know her tell her she needs to eat. Yes, she knows this. I guess people don't realize that telling someone they're too skinny and need to eat can be just as hurtful as telling someone they're fat.

It's just going to take time to get back to normal and adjust to a new diet, but she's learning. We all are. As long as she's careful it'll be okay. Thankfully, she has a great support system of both family and friends who help her and encourage her along the way, as well as a new Gastroenterologist. Having a great doctor on your side is just as important. If you're not happy with yours, don't settle.

For more information, visit the following websites:

Celiac Disease Symptoms, Testing & Diet | BeyondCeliac.org

Celiac Disease Foundation

Helpful downloads:

The Gluten Free Scanner on the App Store (apple.com)

The Gluten Free Scanner - Apps on Google Play

Find Me Gluten Free - Apps on Google Play

Disclaimer:

I'm not a doctor or celiac disease expert; I'm simply the mother of a celiac. of newborns say, “It’ll be easier in a few months when they’re
on a better sleeping and feeding schedule.” That never happens.

They often say,
“It’ll be easier when they’re toddlers and can do more.” Yes,
they can do a lot more, leaving you chasing them everywhere
and tired for several years.

Then they say, “Oh,
I can’t wait until they start school so I can take a break.” And
then your baby goes to get out of the car on that 3rd day
and starts to cry, not wanting to go and have to leave you, yet
again, for what feels like an eternity. You’ll cry, too.

Then it’s, “It’ll
be so much easier when they can drive themselves to school and ball
practice.” And then you worry yourself sick every time they get
behind the wheel or ride with a friend.

During those tough
teenage years, they say, “I can’t wait for them to grow up and
start living their own lives.” Then, they do.

That’s the part no
one warned me about! Letting go, for me,
has 100% been the hardest part of being a parent.

So, parents of small
children…

Enjoy those dirty
diapers, colicky nights, and tired days chasing a toddler after a
night of no sleep. Appreciate the days when all they want is you…
while you use the bathroom, take a shower, or try to sleep in peace.
Relish in the moments when they climb into your lap or reach up to
hold your hand when you’re busy or have your hands full.

Soon—way too
soon—they grow up.

We all know this
happens and look forward to the day when our hard work and love have paid off. Even so, I never thought about the moment I’d actually
have to let go and let them.

It’s like when
they first start to walk and you keep a tight grip on their hands,
just in case they fall, you’ll be able to catch them. Then it goes
to one hand. Then they just hold onto a finger for balance. Once they
get the hang of it, we have them let go so they’ll realize they can
walk on their own. They’ll fall every now and again, but we help
them up and send them on their way. All we can do is hope they
watch where they're going and get back up when they fall.

Or the first time they want to go swimming. It’s so much
easier to simply tell them no and not let them get in the pool than
try to save them when they start to sink, but that’s part of
growing up. They’ll never learn how to swim if they never get in.

And they’ll never
learn to walk on their own if we don’t let go so they can.

(That’s what I
keep telling myself, at least.)

Yes, I probably subconsciously wrote this post mainly for myself. Again, this is how I go about publishing my books and everyone's experiences may be different. It's a bit of a long read, but I wanted to keep all of the information and links together in one place.

Over the past ten years, friends who are new to writing have asked me many questions about many things, from self-publishing to query letters. Because of this, I thought it'd be easier to direct them here instead of repeating the same things over and over again. I'm not an expert when it comes to the things I'm going to talk about, however, any help new writers can get is better than nothing. I wish I had someone to help guide me along the way instead of having to learn everything on my own. With that being said, let's begin.

After recently being an Acquisitions Editor for a small press, I realized just how many writers don't edit their work... like, at all. I got several submissions that were so bad that they were actually hard to read. So, the first thing a writer needs to do is edit and revise their work.

1. If you don't have money to spend, at least use something like Grammarly to help you polish your work. I also recommend using beta readers who will give you honest feedback. I've actually printed my manuscripts and told them they were free to mark anything that they wanted me to look at and to leave notes in the margins if they thought I should elaborate or explain something. Most of my beta readers enjoy this because they like being a part of the process and getting a first glimpse of the story before anyone else.

I know it's exciting and you want to rush things along, but you also don't want to be in such a hurry that you submit or publish a messy novel. If your manuscript is riddled with mistakes or doesn't make sense, no one will take it or you seriously.

After I get my manuscripts edited and revised, it's time to either submit to publishers/agents or start formatting, if self-publishing.

If you want to be published by a publisher:

2. Nobody likes this part. Even so, if you want your book traditionally published, it must be done. (The headings and footers get me every time!) Thankfully, Amazon has made it easy to format basic ebooks with Kindle Create. Simply download it to your computer, upload your manuscript, and choose how you want it to look. Everything else is done for you, which makes this super easy. Formatting for paperback, however, is a little more tedious, in my opinion.

If I tried to dive into exactly how to do this, it would be way too long for a simple blog post (and this one is already lengthy), so I will direct you here for help on formatting your paperback book, as well as this great post, which has a lot of basic formatting information. It's where I obtained and utilized most of my information and then learned from trial and error. If you don't have time or the patience to format your book, you can always hire a book formatter, especially if your book is more intricate or has illustrations.

3. The Cover

If you're not savvy in regard to photo editing and design, I highly recommend paying someone to make a book cover for you. Like editing, this part is extremely important. People say not to judge a book by its cover but that's exactly what people do. An awesome cover can sell your book while a bad one can cause readers to keep scrolling.

There are many cover artists out there, so it shouldn't be hard to find one. A couple who have either designed a cover for me or who I like the aesthetic of are Wicked by Design and Art Lynx. Wicked designed my very first covers when my debut book series was contracted through Limitless Publishing. Art Lynx also has beautiful pre-made covers, which make the process quick and easy.

Personally, I usually do my own covers. I've thought about paying someone and saving myself the time and worry that goes into making one, yet I always end up doing them on my own. To lead you in the right direction if you want to try to do it yourself, I use PicMonkey. It's easy and I've used it so long that, even with updates, I know what I'm doing. Some people also use Canva or Photoshop, which are also great. Photoshop actually has a color setting for CMYK, which is better for print, whereas others only have RGB. Whatever you choose to use, use it wisely and get the opinions of others once you're finished. Just scrolling through covers on Amazon will give you an idea of what a professional cover looks like compared to a not-so-professional cover. More often than not, you can easily spot the difference and it's not hard to tell which one you feel more drawn to.

The hard part of designing a cover, aside from choosing the cover art, is size. If your cover isn't sized appropriately, especially for paperbacks, it will spill over into the bleed area and will have to be resized. Amazon's Cover Creator makes this pretty easy, however, it still has its issues if you're not used to making book covers. It's all trial and error until you get it right... or hire someone to get it right.

4. Publication

Marketing

The big day is closing in and you're letting everyone know you've got a new release coming out, or at least I hope you're letting everyone know. This, for me, is the hardest part of being a writer... marketing. I have an extremely hard time promoting my own books. The easiest way to overcome this is to utilize ARCs (Advance Reader Copies), book bloggers, and sites like Booksprout, Netgalley, and Hidden Gems, to name a few.

When it comes to book bloggers, be respectful. Don't contact a blogger with your book information and tell/ask them to share it, which is just rude. If you don't know any bloggers, take some time to become acquainted with the ones who like the type of book you wrote. Follow them, interact with them, and think of creative ways that will not only benefit you as a writer but will ultimately benefit them and their followers, as well. Giveaways are a great way to make everyone involved happy and it doesn't cost much money. Giveaways are my go-to marketing plan because I'm not simply telling people about my upcoming release, but I'm also generating a buzz around a giveaway. I do both ebooks and signed copies, but signed copies usually do the best. Who doesn't love a signed book?

While I keep it simple, some go all out when it comes to marketing, paying hundreds of dollars for Facebook/Instagram ads, as well as buying ads and promotions on book outlets like Book Bub. Whichever avenue you choose to take, just be wise about it and choose the one that's best for you and your book.

Distribution

Something writers may not think about is distribution. How can I get my books to as many retailers as possible? Well, unless you use KDP Select, which is exclusive to Amazon for 90 days (you can read more about it here), there are other distribution services that distribute your books to a larger market, including libraries and other book retailers, such as Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, etc. The one I use that's quick and easy is Smashwords, which is free up front (they take royalties) and has worked well for my needs. Some also use IngramSpark or Draft2Digital. You can find out more about the top services here.

I also upload straight to Google Play and utilize their option to use content reviewers. Content reviewers get full access to the book for pre-publication reviews, testing, and promotions.

Beyond Release Day

A majority of your work will be behind you once release day has come and gone, however, you will still have several things to stay on top of, such as sales, reviews, continued marketing, and promotions when sales slow down... and they will, so don't panic. I try to keep my promotions relevant to the genre of book I'm promoting, such as Halloween for all of my paranormal books, for example.

This would also be a good time to do some book signings, even if it's simply one at your local library or book store. These are extremely fun and allow you to meet readers and talk about your books.

Lastly, keep your website and social media pages up to date. If you're like me and don't post a lot, at least be interactive with other accounts and maintain a presence in the book world. It's important to interact with readers and respond to any comments or questions they may have about your book. They're the ones who are buying your books, so take care of them.

I hope I've provided some information or links that you find useful. If someone has any additional tips or tricks, feel free to leave them in the comments. If there's something I've touched on that you'd like me to elaborate on in a different post, let me know and I'll do my best to do that.

Happy writing!

Janaehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10445538320161177834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6889765750073435888.post-69800838670528454442020-03-01T16:10:00.000-05:002020-03-01T16:10:29.291-05:00FREE ebooks for "Read an Ebook Week"!

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I've got my latest duology on sale for less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee ~ only $2.98!
In this YA story, you get to see how mental illness not only affects the person who has it, but how it also touches everyone around them in some way.
Mental illness is just that, an illness, not a weakness. The sad part about it is that many people don't speak up or get help until, for some, it's too late.

Depression isn't simply being sad.

OCD isn't simply a need to clean.

Schizophrenia isn't simply hearing voices.

There's nothing simple about mental illness.

My Mental Illness

Everyone's story is different and nobody should be judged by their illness. For instance, I suffer from anxiety and OCD but I'm not defined by it. It's not who I am, it's something I have.

My OCD consists of double checking a lot of things (doors, alarms, the stove), holding on to my pants when I walk out of dressing rooms, touching my zipper before walking out of a bathroom, making sure things are evenly spaced, the need to secure things, and finishing what I start, even if it keeps me up all night. I also use a lot of hand sanitizer, keeping it in my vehicle and purse at all times, and don't like shaking hands. I'm sure there's more, but those are the main ones.

My anxiety involves crowds, going into new places, excessive worry, racing thoughts at night, and, oddly enough, things that spin or swing. Even when I was little, I didn't like for my swings to swing if I wasn't on them and would drape them over the bars so they couldn't. I also hate going to stores or big events and like to have a 'support person' with me who I'm close to and who understands. At restaurants, you'll find me sitting against a wall, hidden in a booth, never in the middle. I'll drive across town to go to a store or gas station I'm familiar with, passing several along the way. Circuses are a big no for me, too. I even get anxious about going to see the monster trucks when they come to town, especially when they do the donuts. I literally have to close my eyes.

Years ago, I used to have anxiety attacks but learned to talk myself out of them. Now, my anxiety shows up in the form of anger, agitation, and panic, as well as stress (or emotional) eating.

Am I crazy? Some might think so, but it's because people don't understand. Heck, even I don't understand it, sometimes, but I'm aware of it. It took my husband a while to embrace my 'quirks' and to learn the signals I give off when I'm feeling anxious or why I obsess over small (and sometimes strange) things. That's one of the reasons why this month is important to me and what prompted me to write the book, Leaves of Three.

My 1st annual Halloween Ghost Story Contest winner is NDA Grant with her suspenseful paranormal story, Snatched. As soon as I started reading this story, it pulled me right in. Aside from piquing my curiosity as to what may possibly happen, I really enjoyed her writing style. Even though it's a short story, there are still some twists I didn't see coming, which is why I chose this story as the winner. I hope you enjoy it! If you do, make sure to comment on it and let her know.

NDA Grant is an Urban Fantasy writer who leans toward the dark side of things, which is evident in this story. Some writers who influence her are Stephen King, Anne Rice, Dean Koontz, and Edgar Allan Poe, with special guest appearances by Emily Dickenson and Mary Shelley. She loves a good Mystery Thriller, but Paranormal and Horror are the foundations of her youth.
I didn't realize I was even a fan of this type of story until I read this one. It truly evokes the spirit of Halloween, so I had to share it with all of you.

After many years of reading and continuously trying to figure out the plotline ahead of time, Wayne realized he had cultivated an extremely active imagination and needed a way to use it in a constructive way. Wanting to write a more traditional horror story that was plot-driven and not just gore, he came to the idea of writing a sequence of Origin stories, starting with this one.
I remember crying when I got my first 'fans' on Goodreads. It was surreal, yet scary, realizing a long-time dream was coming true. Five years later, readers still talk about how "For Always" is one of their favorite stories and I get the warm fuzzies all over again.

Whether you're a writer or reader, Wattpad is a free platform that is full of stories... such as the recent Netflix hit The Kissing Booth and the best-selling book series, After, by Anna Todd. Yes, they all got their start on Wattpad! I have a couple of stories on there that are exclusive to Wattpad, as well, so you won't see them anywhere else.

How I've never heard of this book until recently is beyond me, but it was my curly-haired mom who introduced me to the method it gave birth to. After complimenting her on her suddenly tame hair, she said she was waiting to see if I'd notice, that she'd been using the curly girl method. When I asked her what that was, she went on to explain that she used conditioner to wash, then another conditioner to condition, no towels, heat, or brushes, then started talking about making a cast with gel. I was like... "What? A cast? You use conditioner to wash your hair?"

Once she translated it all and pointed me in the right direction, I quickly tried it and fell in love with this method, so I thought I'd share it and recommend the book, since it seems practical for everyone, not just curly girls.

What is the curly girl method?

The curly girl method is a way to take care of curly/wavy hair so that it looks and feels the best it possibly can. This method is explained in detail in Lorraine Massey's book, Curly Girl: The Handbook. What I've found while researching this method is that it can be a bit overwhelming at first because of all the information, however, it shouldn't be. I've easily incorporated it into my haircare routine, since I have wavy hair, and my teenage daughter has, as well, even though her hair is fairly straight. In my opinion, all types of hair can benefit from this method, especially if you're having any type of issues, such as dry hair/scalp, frizzing, or simply lackluster, dull hair.

If you want to know everything there is to know about this method and the techniques recommended, I highly suggest you buy the book and/or join the group on Facebook, which has a lot of informative files to go through that list a lot of important things, including 'CG' (Curly Girl) approved products. If you just want to know the basics, right now, then continue reading what I do.

The Basics

Step 1: Deep Cleanse (only done once)

Before you begin this method, you must use a clarifying shampoo, dish liquid, or an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse to strip your hair of waxes, silicones, and buildup. Silicones are in a lot of the products and conditioners we use, especially if they're supposed to help smooth the hair. Dimethicone is a popular one, but any products with words ending in 'cone' on the ingredients list should be avoided. Also, avoid petrolatum, mineral & castor oils, and waxes. If it is preceded by 'PEG-(and a number)', that means it's water-soluble and usually okay to use, but if you have doubts, just don't use it. If you do accidentally use something with these things in it, don't panic! Just do this step again to remove them.

Step 2: Use either a Cowash or 'Low Poo' (Sulfate-free) Shampoo

What is a cowash, you might ask? Cowashing is using a conditioner to wash your hair. It sounds weird, and even a bit gross (or it did to me), but it works. Personally, I only use a conditioner made for cleansing hair (As I Am Coconut CoWash), which I get from Walmart, while some use any type of silicone-free conditioners, like Suave Naturals. I prefer something that's specifically made for cleansing because it has ingredients for this purpose. I didn't think I could do it, the whole no-suds thing, but the cowash I use really cleans my hair and scalp, almost making it squeaky clean, yet it's super conditioning, so my natural oils aren't stripped ~ it's simply clean. I hate using shampoo, now, even though it's sulfate-free, and only do it about once a week, if that, and mainly only if I'm running short on time. Even if I have to cowash every day, due to working out or whatever, my hair still feels and looks great.

A lot of people already use sulfate free shampoos, yet these shampoos don't remove silicones well, so they build up on the hair, preventing conditioners from being able to penetrate the hair strand, making the hair actually dryer, starving it of moisture. Then we use smoothing products, which usually contain more silicones, to smooth the hair, since dry hair is usually frizzy, so it becomes a vicious cycle.

Step 3: Scrub, scrub, scrub, rinse well, condition, comb, & rinse again

Cowashing isn't like shampooing because there are no sulfates or harsh cleansers to depend on to get your hair and scalp clean. Because of this, manually scrubbing your scalp/hair is a must, but don't use your nails. Rinsing well is also a must, since you don't want to leave all the gunk you just loosened in your hair. Once your hair is rinsed, use a silicone-free conditioner on your hair, not your scalp, and comb if necessary. Yes, if you're wearing your hair curly, comb it now, not later. This will keep your curl pattern intact and help it to 'clump', which is a good thing. After letting the conditioner sit for a few, rinse it out. This entire process can be time-consuming, yes, but so worth it.

Step 4: Don't use a towel

Towels can be damaging, roughing up your cuticle, so use something more gentle, like a t-shirt (what I use) or microfiber towel. This is also a step where people kind of do their own thing as far as adding product (leave-in conditioner, mousse, gel) to the hair while it's still soppy wet, but I don't. If you have really curly hair, though, you may want to follow the book more closely at this point in regard to products and when/how to use them.

Step 5: Add product & (if your hair is curly/wavy) scrunch

I always add a silicone-free leave-in conditioner before using any styling products. Two of my faves are the As I Am Leave-In and the Cantu Oil Shine & Hold Mist, which I get from Walmart. My daughter also loves the Shine & Hold Mist to help keep her hair straight, since flat-irons are a no-no *gasp*. The two go-to styling products (aside from curl activators) used most for curly/wavy hair are either mousse or gel. From what I've read, most curlies like gel, while wavies, like myself, like mousse. Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch them in, but try not to touch your hair too much after that so curls stay defined. You'll want your hair to form a crunchy cast (unless it's straight), that you can scrunch out later, leaving behind soft, bouncy curls/waves.

Step 6: Dry using low/no heat

If your hair is curly/wavy, you may want to 'plop' before you dry, which I sometimes do if I have time, but not too long (maybe twenty minutes), since it can lead to frizz for me. If you want to know what plopping is and how to do it, buy the book or Google 'hair plopping', which will pull up a lot of how-to videos. It'll be easier than having me try to explain it here. If you're not plopping, though, simply let hair air dry or diffuse, depending on the look you want. If I wear mine straight, I dry with a flat brush to smooth it out, making sure not to use high heat, ending with cool. If I'm wearing it wavy, I use a diffuser, which is a must for curly hair unless air drying. There is even a method for diffusing that you can look up, but the main thing is to, once again, don't over style or touch the hair, which can disrupt the curl/wave patterns.

Step 7: Style using NO or LOW heat

Once your hair is dry, either by diffusing or air drying, scrunch the cast (hardness from styling products) away. Some people who go to bed, at this point, leave the cast in, since sleeping will naturally remove it. A lot of curlies/wavies also wrap or pineapple their hair to sleep (Google it), but I simply use a satin pillowcase, even when I wear mine wavy. I simply rewet it the next day with my magic Witch I Love Your Hair! spray, which I use a lot, actually, as both a leave-in and styling product to help smooth and either let it air dry or diffuse it for a few minutes to wake my waves up. (I even use it on my face as a toner!)

Whatever you do, don't use harsh heat (irons) to style your hair. Using this method, you shouldn't need it. The most damage and hair breakage I've ever seen in all my years of doing hair almost always come from flat irons.

CG Tips

Like I said before, there's a lot more info in the book, but this is what I do and it has made a HUGE difference in my hair and scalp, which used to be really dry. My hair has gone from being messy frizz to defined waves and is softer than I ever remember it being. With that being said, I've heard of some people having trouble starting out, so here's a few tips I've come across or simply know from doing hair so long.

Don't over think it. Follow the basic CG rules, avoiding the ingredients that suffocate your hair and the heat that cooks it, and go from there with the other stuff.

Don't get overwhelmed. Yes, there's a lot of info that goes along with this method, however, you don't have to incorporate everything all at once. I don't do some of it at all. I think that's why people freak out... they don't follow tip #1.

Don't go crazy. The main products you need to purchase/replace are your shampoo, conditioner, and styling product (if they're not CG friendly). Add on after that, depending on what your hair needs.

It may get worse before it gets better. It didn't for me, but for some this has been called a 'transition period' and will most likely pass. If it happens to you, either more flaky or oily, give it some time. If you've been using harsh shampoos, your scalp has been producing oil to compensate that. It may take it a few days to adjust.

Stiff, brittle, or coated-feeling hair. A lot of the CG friendly products contain coconut, which can mimic protein. Not everyone needs it, so if you use something that has more than your hair needs, it can make it feel rough and brittle. Simply try something without coconut, wheat protein, or keratin and see if that helps.

Stringy, limp, cotton candy-like hair. Unlike a protein overload, if your hair is over-processed, it usually needs protein. If your hair needs more than the products you're using can provide, you can purchase protein/keratin treatments at the local beauty supply store.

Google, Google, Google! I learned so much by doing this! From cowashing, drying, and styling videos to CG approved products, there's a lot of info out there. But again, refer to tips #1 and #2.

To me, Valentine's Day isn't just for couples, but for all of those who have loved ones in their lives. Whether it's a friend, sibling, spouse, neighbor, or co-worker, this is a day set aside to let them know you care about them, since we often don't express it. Yes, they probably know it, but it's nice to show it. This Valentine's Day, I'd like to help you do just that... at least for those loved ones who like to read.

You can even get my newest release, Leaves of Three, for just $1. So, if you've not gotten it yet, now's the time to download it!

The only exception is my the For Always series, which has a price that's controlled by my publisher. However, they have the entire set listed for just $5.99. That's still cheaper than most fast-food meals and will last a whole lot longer... and not make you or the recipient gain a single pound.

Halloween is the best time of the year to read creepy, ghost-filled, chill-inducing books, so, of course, I'd pick this month to have some paranormal book giveaways. Since there are a few, I thought I'd list them all here so nobody missed out. They are all YA, however, I've been told some are rather scary, so....
